B: Sure, I don’t know what you were watching back then, but I can introduce the most famous national opera, Beijing Opera to you. Among over 360 ancient local operas in China, Beijing Opera is known as the national opera, despite its 200-year history. Although it is called Beijing Opera, the origins of it is not actually in Beijing but in the central and south areas of Anhui and Hubei in China.
B: Not exactly. Beijing Opera is purely Chinese opera form dating back to the year 1790, when the famous four Anhui Opera Troupes first came to Beijing in celebration of the 80th birthday of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. The tour was a hit so the troupes stayed. In 1828, some famous Hubei Opera Troupe players came to Beijing. That is how Beijing Opera started off.
B: There are five main characters in Beijing Opera, and they are Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo, and Chou. Sheng stands for a main male role, Dan for a young and beautiful female role, Jing for a painted-faced male role, and Chou for a male or female clown.
