The Arctic Circle boasts a large number of natural resources under the ice. As climate changes, discussion increases about how to get to those resources. Less ice also means possible new business in shipping, tourism and fishing. But there are many problems in reaching those rich resources. Environmentalists are against any large effort to take Arctic resources, warning that the fragile environment could be harmed past repair. Despite that, companies seek business possibilities in the Northwest Passage, and ships are now taking passengers through the Arctic Circle. Besides tourism, shipping companies may start using the passage to save on fuel costs. However, businesses may want to do more than move through the area. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, up to 30% of the world’s undiscovered gas and 13% of its undiscovered oil are inside the Arctic Circle, and there could be other resources, like diamonds, uranium, phosphate, nickel, platinum, lithium, cobalt and pure iron. As a result, countries in the Arctic region, like Greenland, Russia, Canada and the USA, are making claims to land and resources in the area. (180 words)
