The Euro: a Common Currency

The Euro was highly debated in Europe. Should all these countries use the same currency? Common money is a symbol of common culture. Many Europeans did not agree with this. They were concerned about a loss of national identity. They were also worried that one country\’s economy would affect another\’s. Would inflation in Italy affect the French economy?

In 1999, twelve European countries united under the Euro. It benefits citizens and companies. When citizens travel within the Euro area, they do not need to change money. They are able to compare prices more easily. They also do not need to worry about exchange rates. The united currency helps business trade grow. It plays an important role in forming a European single market. In this way, Europeans can compete with the USA and Asian countries.

The Euro is managed by the European System of Central Banks (ESCB). The ESCB produces the banknotes and coins. All banknotes have the same design regardless of country. Only a country code is printed on one side of the banknotes. Each coin has one common side and the other a national side. The national side of the coins is designed by each member country using a unique national symbol. Their designs were chosen through a public survey.

The Euro was adopted on January 1, 2002. Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, and Finland ratified it. England chose not to participate. Now, the Euro is a part of the daily lives of 300 million Europeans. Their unity gives them enough economic power to compete with larger countries.
