1.Directions: Read the question below. You have 30 minutes to plan, write, and revise your essay. Typically, an effective response will contain a minimum of 300 words.
Think about a job you have had or would like to have. In your opinion, what are the most important characteristics that you and the people you work with should possess to be successful in that job?
Use reasons and specific examples to illustrate why these characteristics are important.
The best job in the world is that of a teacher. Not many people think so, but I have thought so for most of my life, and I still do. Yet teaching is not necessarily easy; there are many important characteristics teachers must possess in order to be successful in their work.
First, teachers must be highly knowledgeable about their subject matter, and just as importantly, they must be interested and motivated to keep their subject matter knowledge current. For example, a biology teacher should know not only the curriculum designed for his or her students, but also the most interesting current topics in biology research and how those topics might connect to the student curriculum. Not only will this make them wiser instructors for their students, it will also help them motivate their students by allowing them to relate fascinating facts about recent advances in the field. Their best students will then be well prepared to go on to further studies in biology. To achieve this, one can take night classes, earn higher degrees by attending school part time, read academic journals, go to conferences, and so on.
Second, teachers should have the ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Teachers should not break down when stress levels are high. For example, at the end of the school year, students are usually nervous about their marks and teachers typically have piles of tests or final papers waiting on their desks to be carefully graded. In such situations, it is crucial that the teacher remain calm, assign each paper a fair grade, and help students get through this stressful time.
Third, a teacher should be organized. Schools assign teachers an immense amount of administrative paperwork to do, so it is helpful to be a tidy person, as it will make the paperwork more bearable and less likely to consume a lot of the teachers’ time. Organization is also necessary when planning lessons. Lessons that are well organized are easy to follow, so students can learn the material as quickly as possible.
Finally, the most important characteristic of a teacher is the drive to help others. Teachers should derive pleasure from helping children develop and flourish. Obviously, this is part of the job description, but an excellent teacher genuinely enjoys helping others. Such teachers recognize that helping children improve their knowledge and skills makes teaching an enriching job. The satisfaction of having brought about a positive change, or of having sparked an interest in your subject, is incomparable.
With the characteristics mentioned above, one can be the type of teacher whom students will remember and appreciate for years to come.
