The left-behind children are children left in rural areas while their parents work in cities. The long-time separation from their parents results in serious problems of life, study, social support and mental state.
The left-behind children are emotionally distant from their parents, who cannot provide company or care for the children. The guardians of these children are usually their old grandparents, whose care cannot completely replace that of parents. Family education is severely lacking for left-behind children. Their parents are not by their side to talk to them or help with their study. Most of the guardians are illiterate and thus fail to participate in children’s education. The left-behind children developed serious mental disorders in their emotions and attitudes. Compared with other rural children, the proportions of kids feeling unhappy or unconfldent are higher in the left-behind children.
According to these phenomenon, we propose the corresponding intervention measures: ( 1 ) Set up growth archives for left-behind children. Considering that there are few records of the basic data and situation of these children, the profiles should be established as soon as possible, which is the foundation of research and care projects. (2) Invest more in rural teachers by conducting skill training and building an incentive mechanism. Survey shows that rural teachers have become a possible bridge between left-behind children and the society. We need to give full play to their role and make them the most important support of left-behind children’s education. ( 3 ) Promote urban-rural communication and help left-behind children set diversified life goals. In the future, most of the left-behind children will leave rural areas. The purpose of intervention is to foster their attitudes towards learning, morality and professional capabilities, and prepare them for the life, and work in urban areas.
