Even plants can run a fever, especially when they\’ re under attack by insects or disease. But unlike humans, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away—straight up. A decade ago, adapting the infrared (使用红外线的) scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under attack. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (杀虫剂) spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which always includes plants that don\’t have pest (害虫) problems.
Even better, Paley’s Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. An infrared scanner, on a plane flying at 3,000 feet at night, measured the heat sent out by crops. The data was turned into a color-coded map showing where plants were running \\
1.Plants will run a fever when they are________.(C)
A. sprayed with pesticides
B. facing an infrared scanner
C. troubled with insects or disease
D. having their temperature taken
解析:根据第一段第一句“Even plants can run a fever, especially when they’ re under attack by insects or disease.”
2.In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to________.(B)
A. draw a color-coded map
B. locate the problem area
C. attract insects and treat disease
D. estimate the damage to the crops
解析:根据第二段第二、三、四句“An infrared scanner…measured the heat sent out by crops. The data was turned into a color-coded map showing where plants were running ‘fevers’. Farmers could then spot-spray…”
3.Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by________.(A)
A. making use of spot-spraying
B. transforming poisoned rain
C. consulting infrared scanning experts
D. detecting crop problems at an early stage
解析:根据第二段最后一句“Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.” 故选A。
4.The difficulty in applying infrared scanning technology to agriculture is________.(B)
A. its high cost
B. the financial problem
C. the decreased production
D. the lack of official support
解析:根据最后一段最后一句“…long-distance infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade, but only if Paley finds the financial support which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.”
5.The passage mainly talks about the________.(D)
A. problems of crops
B. temperature of plants
C. roles of Paley’s company
D. function of infrared scanning
What is the nature of the scientific attitude, the attitude of the man or woman who studies and applies physics, biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, medicine or any other science?
We all know that science plays an important role in our society. However, many people believe that our progress depends on two different aspects of science. The first aspect is the application of the machines, products and systems o
